Hysterectomy Alternatives & Laparoscopic Hysterectomy Q&A

NY Pelvic Pain and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery P.C.

What is a laparoscopic hysterectomy?

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally-invasive type of surgery that uses a special instrument called a laparoscope and one or more small incisions to perform surgical procedures, resulting in a shorter recovery time, less discomfort and a lower risk of complications compared to traditional surgical techniques. In a laparoscopic hysterectomy, small incisions are made in the abdomen to provide access to the surgical site. The laparoscope uses a tiny camera to take a video of your uterus and the area surrounding it, projecting the images to a video monitor where they can be magnified for easier viewing. The hysterectomy procedure is performed using special instruments designed for small incisions. In most cases, laparoscopic hysterectomy is performed as a same-day surgery in our state-of-the-art surgical suites at our downtown location.

What options do I have if I decide I'd rather not have a hysterectomy?

Today, several hysterectomy alternatives are available if you decide hysterectomy is not an ideal option. The options will depend on your medical condition and can include:

  • myomyectomy and uterine artery embolization to treat fibroids

  • ablative procedures to treat heavy bleeding

  • laparoscopic procedures for scarring and endometriosis

  • hysteroscopic procedures to treat many issues affecting the uterus or fallopian tubes

  • tubal ligation to prevent future pregnancy

Depending on your symptoms, hormonal therapy or medications may be used to provide relief without the need for any type of surgery.

How can I decide if an alternative to hysterectomy is a good choice for me?

Alternatives can be good options for some patients, but there are some cases where hysterectomy is the most appropriate option. During your office visit, you'll learn about all your options, including alternative treatments when appropriate, and you'll have plenty of time to ask questions and receive guidance so you can feel confident in your care.
