Pelvic Floor Muscle Botox Q & A

NY Pelvic Pain and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery P.C.

What are pelvic floor muscle spasms?

Pelvic floor muscle spasms are spasms or contractions that occur in the pelvic floor muscles, the strong muscles that help control bladder and bowel function and provide support for the uterus and vagina. Spasms can be primary, where there is no identifiable cause, or secondary, where spasms are caused by an underlying condition like chronic inflammation.

What symptoms do pelvic floor spasms cause?

Symptoms can vary from one woman to another and may include:

  • painful intercourse (dyspareunia)

  • frequent urge to urinate

  • sensation that the bladder isn't completely empty after urinating

  • bowel incontinence, increased urge to move the bowels or incomplete emptying of the bowels

Pelvic floor muscle spasms can occur at any age, including the teen and preteen years.

How is Botox® used to treat pelvic muscle spasm?

Although Botox® is commonly associated with the treatment of facial wrinkles, in fact, it's used in many other conditions as well. Botox is a neuromuscular agent which works by blocking the nerve signals between the brain and specific muscles – in this case, the pelvic floor muscles. When these signals are blocked, triggers that normally “tell” the muscles to contract can no longer reach the brain, so spasm doesn't occur. Botox® provides relief to the hyperactive muscles, enabling them to recover over time so spasms no longer occur.

How can I tell if Botox® is right for me?

Before any treatment is administered, you'll undergo a complete physical exam, and your medical history and symptoms will be carefully reviewed. Our office is equipped with the technology needed to perform an array of diagnostic exams, and our physicians are trained in treating many types of pelvic pain, including pain caused by pelvic floor muscle spasms, endometriosis and other underlying issues, so you can feel confident in your care.
